 Haas F1 Team

Haas F1 is a team based between Kannapolis in the USA and Banbury in the UK, set up by NASCAR series team co-owner Gene Haas at the end of 2014.

Having delayed its entry to F1 until 2016 after initially aiming to make the 2015 grid, Haas made a strong start to life in F1 with Romain Grosjean in Australia but things have taken a turn for the worse ever since.

Here is the short history of Haas F1.

Haas F1 timeline

The team signed Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez for its maiden F1 season in 2016 and got off to a flying start with the Frenchman finishing the first race in Melbourne in sixth. The result meant the team was the first since Toyota in 2002 to score on debut.

Gutierrez was caught up in the infamous incident that sent Fernando Alonso barrel-rolling into the turn three gravel trap.

Grosjean continued his strong form to finish fifth in Bahrain but that was the best that the team would muster. The pace dropped off for both drivers and although three further points finishes would come for Grosjean, the team would finish eighth in the constructors' championship with 29 points.

Kevin Magnussen replaced Gutierrez for 2017 and made his mark instantly with consistent points scoring. Combined with Grosjean's efforts, the team remained eighth in the constructors' standings although scored 47 points.

2018 would be the best year for the team in F1, finishing fifth in the standings with 93 points including a best finish in the sport of fourth and fifth in Austria. A change in sponsor for the following season to Rich Energy however derailed the team's momentum, with Grosjean and Magnussen starting to become too close on track.

The season would bring a best result of sixth in Australia for Magnussen and only 28 points all season as the team slumped back down to ninth.

2020 was the most testing season to date. The delayed start to the season almost saw the demise of the team, but when racing got underway only three points were scored.

Both drivers learned that their contracts would not be renewed for 2021 before the end of the season and Grosjean would finish his F1 career two races early after an awful crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix almost cost him his life.

Pietro Fittipaldi deputised for the Frenchman in the final two races but was not picked to continue into 2021.

Another famous surname did join, however. Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin fronted an all-rookie line-up as Haas looked to prepare for the new regulations being introduced in 2022.

With upgrades being ruled out early on in the year, Haas languished at the back of the pack, although Schumacher and Mazepin gained valuable experience.
